One Giant Leap Australia is taking 122 students, educators and adults to Space Camp USA in October!
One Giant Leap Australia (OGL) is providing opportunities for Australian students and showing them future career possibilities; OGL‘s vision is Investing in Tomorrow Today.
The Patron of OGL is former NASA Astronaut Greg Chamitoff. Greg spent over 6 months on the International Space Station and was responsible for placing the last nut and bolt. He currently holds a professorship at both Sydney University and Texas A&M University. Greg is fully committed to the vision of OGL in providing the framework for Australia’s next generation of leaders.
To date, over 300 students, educators and parents have travelled with OGL to both Space Camp USA and Space Camp Turkey. Previous and current participants have been from Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and regional areas such as Derby, Wagga Wagga and Alstonville. By including students, parents and educators, OGL is providing an opportunity for school communities to become fully immersed in supporting our students and preparing them for the challenges they may face in the future.
One Giant Leap is fully invested in STEM or STEAM education. Participating primary and secondary teachers receive 54 hours of accredited training in STEM education. Knowledge and resources that they can bring back immediately and implement for little cost into their classrooms.
Jackie Slaviero is the Foundation Director of One Giant Leap Australia. She has over 30 years’ experience as an educator and draws on this to develop and provide the opportunities for students.
The work of OGL was mentioned in Federal Parliament as part of the development of our students, education, and the workforce required by the newly formed Australia Space Agency. (PARLIAMENT OF AUSTRALIA)
This year’s itinerary commences on 3rd October with a visit to Northrop Grumman Headquarters in Space Park, hear a presentation from a SpaceX rocket specialist who will speak about working in mission control, Florida and a full day at the California Science Centre, home to Space Shuttle, Endeavour – the last shuttle to fly into space. Of course, we have some time for fun, applying our new-found knowledge about physics and roller coasters by visiting Disneyland and Universal Studios.
The group then depart Los Angeles to Space Camp. Space Camp is six days of total immersion in all things space. Student, teacher and parent teams will complete missions, experience micro-gravity, fly in simulators and be challenged by the various activities that form part of an astronaut’s training program.
